IMPROVED TRAMCARS
TWO MORE. IN COMMISSION.
Two tramcars of an improved type have been added to the Tramway Department's rolling stock during the present week. The cars are of the popular double saloon pattern, and embody some new principles. With the idea of guarding against a recurrence of accidents such as that which occurred in Pirie-street some time ago, the cars have been fitted with an emergency device to enable conductors to bring them to a standstill in the event of anything happening to the motormen. In addition, the cars carry the route number signals on the roof, and the signals are constructed so as to be illuminated at. night time. The cars are running very well, and it is hoped to turn out two more of a similar type in a few weeks' time. The tramway rolling stock how comprises between 130 and 140 cars.
