The loss through the Kinnaird Castle fire is estimated to amount to a million pounds. Lady Catherine Basanquet, the Earl's daugher, ran to the burning house and rescued a picture by Raeburn worth £10,000. The pictures, which were scattered all over the castle, included examples of Velasquex, Van Dyck, and Lely. Almost all were destroyed, abo the library, which contained many treasures and relics of high historic interest, bet the documents in the charter room were rescued.
