Steamer Mantua (10,900 toils) collided with the Norwegian ketch Star off St. Catherine's Point. The ketch sank but the crew were rescued. The Mantua proceeded on her way undamaged. A message from New York, dated 30th September, states that Southern California experienced a series of earthquakes during a night and a day, but no damage wa« done. In the Arab Horse Society's test of endurance and fitness, over a hilly course round Lewes, Sussex (the horse* carrying 13st and being ridden sixty miles daily on five consecutive days, with two halts of 30 and 10 minutes respectively), the winner was H. Clarke's Belka, which covered tho distance in 37 hours 38 minutes 49 seconds. Eight horses started Mid two finished., Belka was placed third in the previous year's test oT 50' miles daily for five days. .
