ROAD RACE
WON BY OLYMPIC. A TEAM.
For the conclusion of the harrier season the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A'\^ .A. revived the old-time popular ro;id race, and the event was held on Saturday afternoon. The conditions were that competitors comprise teams of five runners, the first four home in each team to count for points, the winners to hold the Bennett Memorial Shield for one year. The shield was presented by Mr, W. H. Bennett in memory of his aon, a former prominent harrier, who was- killed in Polygon Wood in 1917. The late W. V. Bennett was a member of championship teams in 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1910. He won, the fourmile race in 1904, and the cross-country championship in 1906 and 1909. For Saturday's rage fiye teams entered, but the running. conditions were not of the best, a strong northerly wind having to be faced by competitors over a good portion of the distance. The course of about seven miles started from the Fire Brigade Station and led along Wakefield-street, around Oriental and Evans Bays, • and back to the starting point, via Wellington-road, Constablestreet, Ridiford-street, and Kent-ter-race. From the start at 3.10 p.m. H. Moore (Olympic) took the lead, and at the Oriental Kiosk was showing the wajj tosC. Dentice, D. Todd, and A. Barclay, of the Brooklyn A team. At the patent slip Moore was still^in the lead, with Todd, Barclay, Dentice, and W. Scatchard (Olympic A) holding the other positions in the order named. The positions were the same at Constable-street, and at the Basin Reserve, where Dentice displaced Barclay for third place. Barclay dropper further back, and Scatchard passed Dentice in Victoria-street. From there the positions were unchanged. Running strongly, Moore won by a good two hundred yards from ,Todd, Scatchard being about three hundred yards away third, and Dentice fourth, after an interval of thirty-five yards. Time, 37min 38sec. The winner has this season won two other championships — the Wellington and New Zealand cross-country. In presenting the shield to the winners, Mr. M'Villy congratulated the club on its meritorious performance. He paid a tribute to the splendid manhood of the' late W. V. Bennett, in whose memory the shield was presented, his remarks being received by the assemblage with bared heads. Moore, the winner of the individual championship, received a 1 gold medal, the winning team being the recipients of bronze medals.
