THE SEASON OPENED

! PETONE CLUB.

The-tricky weather . conditions prevailing on Saturday ivere not bjr any means an incentive to good scoring, but in spite of this fact members of the Petone Rifle Club obtained very- creditable results at the official opening of the 1921-22 season at Trentham, when. there was a full attendance of marksmen present. The ranges were 300 and 500 yards ■ respectively, with 10 shots at each range. A disagreeable "fish-tail" wind was blowing, the variations being from 6 degrees left to about 2 degrees right. Among the new members welcomed to the club were Riflemen W M. Jackson arid D. Mason, arid, judging by their performances, will prove a valuable acquisition to the club before the termination of the present season. The first shot of the season was fired by the popular president, R. C 1 Flaws, who registered a central bull's- ■ eye, and compiled the fine total of S3 for the day. The highest score for the day was made by Eric Ballinger, who ran up 48 at 300 yards and 43 at 500. Closely following were T.; Warburton and J. C. Carter with 89 eacE. The outstanding features of'the afternoon's shoot were the performances lof C. Hill and C. Mitchell, both young members of'•the club, who secured the praiseworthy totals of 88 and 85 respectively, and incidentally won spoons in their respective divisions. The championship series will open next Saturday at 300 and ,500 yards, 10 shots, on the Somerville range. A large muster is expected. Following are the scores": — • '
