•NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY'S HALF

YEABLY MEETING.

The'haM-yearly meeting of the council of the New Zealand Society of Aocoturtants was held, in Wellington during the week. Councillors from all districts in the Dominion were in \ attendance.

Members of council expressed pleasure at the acquiescence of solicitors practising in New Zealand with regard to representation* made by > the society to the effect that solicitors should 'include in the articles of association of public companies a clause that the audit of su^h Companies must be conducted by persons registered as public accountant!;.

.Matters pertaining to the society's relations with the University of New Zealand were fully discnsseo^ and the report of a 1 special sub-committee appointed to confer with representatives of the Senate was considered. It was pointed out that the accountancy examinations were now numerically the largest conducted by the University o£ . New Zealand, and the committee of the Senate had promised to : bring forward at the January meeting of the senate representations regarding the standard of th society's examinations and the per- 1 sonnel of the examiners, together 'with a suggestion that in future any proposed alteration to the accountancy awl Bachelor of Commerce courses should hn iir^t submitted to the society before action is taken by the senate.

Grants of £100 each were made to the University Colleges at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin far the ensuing year. The council reaolved that where returned soldiers have been granted provisional exemption from the accountante' preliminary examination, this exemption wiE be cancelled unless such candidates! pass in three subjects of the society'n examination on or before November, 1922. ■:

It was decided that in future th« names of those- persons excluded from membership of the society be published in fie annual report. The council also resolved that the sum of 3s be allocated! from the subscription of each member for the benefit of the society's benevolent fund. . '

A discussion took place regarding: professional etiquette, and a committee was set up to report to the next meeting of the council in connection with this matter. It was mentioned that in all. probability the Companies Act would be revised during the coining, session, and the society will be pleased to receive suggestions frpm members as to any alterations considered advisable.

Mr. George William Hutchison, of Auckland, was ( elected president, and Mr. James Morrison, of Christchurch, was elected vice-president, for the ensuing y«KC
