A cable message from London announces that iMr. A. C. Willis, former manager of the Union Bank of Australia, has ;been appointed a director.
Mr. P. W. Rootham has been invited to accept the office of delegate for New Zealand to the Lawn Tennis Association, London.
The death occurred at Auckland on Thursday, of Mr. Frederick James Hammond, following on' an apoplectic seizure on the previous day. The deceased ,was a partner in >. the firm of Hammond and Cracknell, barristers and solicitors.
A number of personal friends of Mr.. K. H. Tucker, the well-known Wellington cricketer, yesterday presented him with a gold-mounted tobacco-pouch, and expressed the hope that he. would continue to take a lively; interest in the game. •
Mr. Alfred E. Cleaver, who died at Wanganui. on Thursday, aged' 34 years, had been a-well-known resident of Palmerston North for many years. He was an enthusiastic follower of hockey, and was previously a representative player as goalkeeper,. / / A pioneer of Auckland, Mr. John Dundon Dillon, died in Sydney on Thursday, the 18th inst. When a young man Mr. Dillon was well known in musical circles in Auckland, being for many years a member of the Choral Society, and associated with the late Judge Fenton. ■ He also formed and conducted the Artillery (now Garrison) Band, also the Auckland City and Hibernian Bands. Mr.""" Dillon arrived in New Zealand' with his regiment, the 18th Royal Irish (being a member of the regimental , band forty-two strong). During the long stay in the colony of the regiment he saw, much fighting in the Waikato, for which he received the Maori War Medal. When his regiment left: New, Zealand for England, via Sydney, he took his discharge at the latter place, and returned to Auckland, where he continued his musical career. He was attached to the Supreme Court, Auckland, Native Land Court, and later was Government storekeeper at Newmarket. He then took up farming in the Waikato, where he lived for several years at Mercer.
