NOT YET LOST

THE CANADIAN LMPORTER

VESSEL SUPPORTED BY CARGO

(ONITBD PSSB3 ASSOCIATION.—COHIUOII.)

1 ' (KEUMR'B IBLIQP.AU.)

(Received August 27, 2 p.m.)

OTTAWA, 26th August.

It is officially announced that after the Canadiar- Importer had been abandoned in a sinking condition owing' to her seams having opened, another attempt ia being made to save the ship. The steamer Cordova rescued the majority of the crew, and stood by on Thursday. The Importer's decks are aiwasih, and only (the superstructure is showing above the waves; but she has a cargo of timber aboard and this is keeping the ship from foundering. After being aboard the Cordova all day, Captain Bissetfc and part of the crew returned on board the Importer to-night, hoping that the vessel may be towed to Vancouver. The Government steamer Canadian Observer, diverted from San Francisco, should reach the Importer to-morrow .night. If the weather is fine there is a chance of salvage. r In the meantime two officers and nine* of the crew, who left in a lifeboat to endeavour to reach the coast of Oregon, are missing. Four steamers^ are on the way v to the rescue of the Importer and should be alongside on Saturday morning. The Manuka, from San Francisco, is just ahead of the Canadian Observer, while the Canadian Winner, returning from Australia, •was diverted when .she heard tho Wireless call on Wednesday night that the Importer was sinking. Captain Bissett wirelessed this morning that he could hold out for a week.
