PREMIER'S ANSWER

NO DEFINITE PROGRESS

OFFER TO CONFER STILL OPEN. ' ->■ 1

(Received August 27, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, 26th August. Mr. Lloyd George has replied to Mr. de Valera. He intimates that the Government's offer to continue the conferences is still open; but he emphasises that the British offer is such as the great Irish patriots of the past never dreamed of. The opinion of the civilised world upon the offer shows this. Mr. Lloyd George says he cannot prolong the mere exchange of notes. . It is essential that definite and immediate progress should be made towards a basis of settlement. "Your letter seems to show no such progress. If the, considerations we put forward can be reconciled with Irish aspirations, I shall 'b| happy to meet you and your colleagues."
