[Sir Sam Hughes, who was born in Ontario in 1853, was Minister of Militia and Defence .from 1011 td 1916. He'had been in the active militia since his thirteenth year, and served 1 in the South African War in 1899-1900, being.memtioned several times i*i dispatches, and iti the European War in France in 1914----1915. He" personally offered to raise corps for the Egyptian and Sudanese campaigns, the Afghan frontier war, and the Transvaal War. He raised Canadian contingents for the European War in 19H-16. In 1597-98 he visited New Zealand and Australia in the interest of colonial assistance in Imperial wars.] /
