LEAGUE GAME

AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON.

The first match to' be played- locally between Auckland and Wellington for some years is to. take place at the Basin Reserve on .Saturday. The .Auckland team js fully representative of Auckland form, and patrons are certain to see an exhibition that will fully repay them for' iheir patronage. This. year Wellington .is particularly strong in comparisonflrith previous years, and although it was^ibeaten at Auckland on 30th July it wagHhe very heavy arid strangely laidout'ground that; was mainly .responsible. The Auckland Star, in reporting the game, said that "the luck was with Auckland, and the spirited defence and well-sustained attacks of the Wellington visitors really deserved a better result than the score-board showed. In succession, Nicholls, Nunn, Kruze, Williams, Harvey, and Le Warne were within inches of the gqal-line almost under the goal posts, and it was more by good luck than by good management that Auckland, saved their line. Later, the Blacks were at it again, both backs and forwards combining in a vivid attack that certainly wbnld have succeeded had the ball and the ground been a little more dry." The result of this game has had a good effect upon the Wellington boys, who have corrected their'mistakes, and are a much better team in consequence. They are also ; getting tne advantage of coaching from Mr. Harry Tancred, who captained the late New 1, Zealand team which played in Australia. The following is the Wellington team :—' ,

Full-back,: T. Balks;' three-quarters, F. Tetley, F. Nunn, J. Shannahan; fiveeighths, Doc. Nicholls (captain), H. Nunn: half, J. Kruze; forwards, L. Zimmerman, H.. Harvey, R. Shannahan, W. Jue Warne, 0. Haddock, J. Hedges. Emergencies: Backs, . Baxter, Foley; forwards, Williams, :W. Hedges. ,
