TRADE WITH HAWAII
NEW ZEALAND'S POSSIBILITIES
The offer of the XJx^on Steam Ship Company to guarantee, if possible, space each month for 150 tons of frozen meat consigned to Hawaii was conveyed by the. Board of Trade to the Manager of the Import »ud Export Department of the Pan-Pacific Trades, Ltd., Honolulu. The board has since received a reply which reads as follows:—
"Wo thank you very kindly for the interest you. have taken in having sent us a cable reading as follows: 'Niagara, Makura, now taking all refrigerated cargoes offering for Honolulu. Union Steam Ship Company hope space can be guaranteed 150 tons meat 1 every month even when Vancouver shipments commence October.' We had your cable published, and our papers here favourably commented upon tho slight advance we have made, no donbfc by constantly hammering away afc the Union Steam Ship Company.' It was the writer's experience- during many years in business in New Zealand that we could only get a modicum of attention by constantly worrying 'the . company. We are quite aware that yon at your end are doing your best to make the trade between ftew Zealand and Honolulu more effective. We at this end have quite succeeded vn increasing the quantity of New Zealand meat shipped to here, and the writer hopes that ultimately he will be able to displace the meat that has been carried here for some time from Sydney. We shall be glad of any further information you can give as at any time, either by cable or by letter." The above letter was before the Central Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. B. Hart, vice-president, stated that with the present steamer service it was a difficult matter to organise an Island trade. However, they should endeavour to get the Union Company to realise the importance of tie Island trade. The company was inclined to run to the Islands, and even through to San Francisco, a very inferior class of vessel, both cargo-carriers and passenger ■boats. The traders would need to have tho backing of everybody else. Under existing conditions the development of much of tha Island trade must be left. toAuckland.
