CHESS
THE WELLINGTON CLUB.
Play has not been at all brisk lately iv th-e annual championship tourney of the Wellington Chess Club, an unduly large number of games being outstanding. It is hoped that mosf of these will bo disposed of in the near future, as the club's representatives will require ail the match practice that they can get in the next few weeks if anything like a good showing is to be made in the telegraphic matches against tho powerful Otago and Auckland Olubs. Much better progress has. been made in the club's 1921 "Petherick" tourney, the best scores to date being as follow :—Gyles, sen., 8 wins 1 draw, E. S. Taylor 8-0, W. 0. Whyto 7-3, A. L. Lawson 6-2, H. Jessup 6-4, E. A. Hicks SA-2i, W. Wring s£-34, N. Doneghuo s^-54, D. L. Bruton 5-2, A. E. Jessup 5-3, R. J. Barnes 44-14, Foully, jun., 4-2, C. Dryden 4-4, Mrs. Gyles 3-3, A. S. T. If all the fixtures in this big tourney are to be disposed of before the Christmas holidays, the good) progress of the past few weeks will have to be maintained' in the coming months. NGAIO CHESS CLUB. 1 This club's 1921 handicap tourney is rapidly approaching- completion,' only four more rounds having to be contested. Eight of the twelve competitors hare so far scored half or more of their games, as follows :—F. J. Brooker 44-I*, A. I. Coleman 4Hi, J. Lindsay 5-2, A. B. Topp 6-3, W. J. Hicks 44-2s, E. E.
