THE PACIFIC
PROBLEMS MUST BE FACED
BEFORE WASHINGTON CONFER-
ENCE IS HELD
(UNHID TRESS ASSOCIATION COP3TRIQHT.)
(AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)
(Received July 22, 9.20 a.m.)
LONDON, 21st July.
Speaking at the American luncheon at the Savoy, Mr. W. M. Hughes said that if the Washington Conference were not to produce the same Dead Sea fruit as the League of Nations, it must take cognisance of those principles which mean much between men and between nations. Certainly we cajinot hope to get what the world desires out of it unless the great Pacific problems are faced frankly and cleared out of the way. The great object of the Conference is to get America, Japan, and Britain to. disarm, but this will be impossible until the disturbing factors in the Pacific are removed. A conference to discuss these questions must be held first, .and on that conference Australia and New Zetland must bo represented.
