"ABSOLUTELY UNFOUNDED"
UNIMPROVED VALUES AND
TAXATION.
Tire tranquillity of the proceedings aS the Assessment Court was somewhat disturbed yesterday afternoon in consequence of a suggestion made by MV..D. M. Findlay, who represented certain owners' of - property in Hobson-street, that "there had been a designed appreciation of unimproved values for taxa--tion purposes." "I will not allow any person here to make a general charge of that sort, which is absolutely unfounded," •warmly rejoined the President of the Court, Mr. V. G. Day, S.M. "It is not a proper thing to do. You are making a grave charge against Government officers who are not in a position to speak for themselves " Mr. Findlay: "I am making ho cliargo against Government officers at all. As a matter of principle, valuations have been raised." His Worship: "I was speaking, and it is not usual for any member ot ih& Bar. to interrupt wheu members of a Court are speaking 1, and I am nut nsed to it. You made a charge against Government officers,, and no prolmwioiial man has any right to coice into Court to make such remarks without having foundation to do so. I hope that no other member of the profession will follow the example."
