NOTES AND COMMENTS
(IX "SIR LANCELOT.")
Acceptances for the .Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdles and Winter Cup, also general entries for the C.J.O. Matting, close on Friday, at 8 p.m. The totalisa-tor turnover at the recent meeting at Trentham showed a Jailing off of over £15,000 compared with the corresponding meeting ayear ago, when the . meeting was held on Wednesday' and Saturday, 1 in perfect weather. ■' A decrease was confidently anticipated by the executive of the club, and the; result of the gathering- was considered quite satisfactory., . ' ' Up to the close of the Wellington Racing Club's Meeting, the progeny of Martian had won £30,744 .in New Zealand this season. Demosthenes ihad secured £24,678 and Absurd £21,105. The withdrawal of: Luperino from his Grand National Steeplechase , engagements probably ■ means thait lie will! also .be allowed to forfeit, his engagement in, the priiw^pal ovekit at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's Meeting on Saturday next, for which acceptance was. made. , ' While at Trentham 'ast week Mr. A. J. Toxward arranged for Lord Martian to be shipped to Sydney by, J. Lowe, who will prepare the colt for his classic and handicap engagements in the spring' in Australia. . ■' . ' The North Island gelding Buddy "hassecured £255 in stakes so far this "sea- 1 son, without a win. He has been once second. and six times third. His money earning efforts started in October and wound up at ..Trentham last week. ; The withdrawal of Strategy from the Winter Cup, prooably means that J. T. Jamieson's stable will rely on Prince Martian, who ran a good .race in the Stewards' Handicap on the first day at Trentham. The last-named is in, the Riccarton race with 9.2. « Silent Dick has been rehandicapped to 10.10 in the Gisborne Steeplechase, and 11.8 in the Tramway Steeplechase, at the Gisborne Meeting on Thursday next. The Alteration-Coalition comEinations which was successful at Trentham, is much spoken of in with the principal events at the Grand National Meeting. Both horses are at Trentham awaiting the return of their trainers, who have gone home prior to the horses being shipped South. . ■ j Waimai, who has already contested the Grand National Steeplechase on four occasions, is ' considered an unlikely starter in the forthcoming race. It is i^iderstood that_ the trotting auhorities will join with ■ the Racing Conference in connection with the scheme, which was adopted last week, for the appointment of racecourse detectives. The idea is that the detectives shall be available for all meetings and that trotting clubs, as well as racing clubs, sl.all contribute to the cost of the Bcheme, by means of a levy, based on the gross totalisator investments during the preceding year. Grand National Steeplechase candidates in Jack Symons, Barrister, Hard Hit, Master Hamilton, and Dunmure are engaged in the principal cross-country event at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's Meeting on Saturday next. The race-is worth less than 250 soys to the owner of the winner, arid consequently does not cany extra poundage in the big: event at Bficcarton. The Aucklander Cantoris was in front of the field after going six furlongs in ■ the Crofton Handicap at Trentham on | Saturday. He is in the Levels Hack/ Handicap, six furlongs, at South Canter-1 bury, on Saturday with the minimum. Hitherto the New Zealand Trotting Conference has only had one permanent stipendiary steward, Mr. T. H. Davey, and a number of deputies. It has now been decided to appoint another to a permanent ■ position, and Mr. A^ G. Mabee, of Aiickland, who for some time has been acting as a deputy, has received the appointment. After the poor showing they made at Trentham it is-reported -that Foxton trainer A. M. Wright does not intend to take Sartoline and Otauru Kid down for the National. . : The fences to be jumped in the C.J.C. National Steeplechase are: Brush hurdle 4ft 4in, brush hurdle 4ft 4in, brush hurdle 4ft 4in, manuka brush 4ft 9in, sod wall 3ft 9in, post and rail 3ft 6in, first of double 3ft 9in, second of double 1 4ft 3in, sod wall 3ft 6in, manuka brush 4ft 9in, , \ " :
