NEW FEDERAL TARIFF
COST TO THE PEOPLE.

MELBOURNE, 15th July.
In the Senate, SenatorGardiner, speaking against the Tariff Bill, said he calculated that the tariff would cost the people fifty millions yearly. The duty would not bestow any direct benefit in other directions, as the advantages of a high duty in many_ industries would be eaten up in the increased cost of raw materials.

In the House of Representatives, the Tariff Board Bill passed the third reading by 28 votes to nine after an amendment had been carried against the Ministry, by 22 votes to 21, providing for machinery to deal with manufacturers who refuso to trade witii small retailers. The Senate debate on the tariff was adjourned till 'Tuesday..
