PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
The fortnightly meeting of -the S.P.C.A. Committee-was held on Monday last, the president (Mr. Meadow-, croft) presiding over a full 'attendance of members, A letter was received from Mr. T. T. Hugo enclosing a cheque for £5, in continuation of the late Mrs. Hugo's annual donation for the purpose of an essay competition—the subject being "The Humane Treatment of Dumb Aninials." It was resolved that the essay competition be held as usual, and a sub-committee was appointed to draw up conditions. Correspondence was from, the Christchurch S.P.C.A. on the question of proposed amendment to the Police Offences Act regarding cruelty to; animals. The matter was left in the hands 'of the Inspector to report.. Collections totalling £3 3s 6d w«re acknowledged, .including £1 2s 6d from the Levin District High School Junior League. The Inspector reported on various cases that he had looked into. Several letters were re^ ceived from schools about the Junior League, which showed that the league was flourishing in a very satisfactory manner. It was decided to invite applications for a canvasser an 4 collector for the society in place of Miss Wignall, who has resigned. ■ ■
