KIRKWOOD SIX »OWN
A BAD FOURTH ROUND,
(IWIKD PRESS ASSOCIATION.—CefTRISKT.) (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received June 25, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 24th June. The third round of • the Golf Championship was played in hot weather and in less wind. Kirkwood showed magnificent steadiness, and with a little more luck with his shot putts would have returned sensational figures. - He had a great start with a perfect 4 at the first, and holed a great putt of fifteen yards at the second for 3. At the fourth he found the rough as the result of a slightly sliced driveT Taking his baft'y he finished pinhigh to the left, but took three to hole out. He had hard luck in just missing a fifteen yards putt at the sixth for 3, and at the seventh he missed a four feet putt for. 4. Two. perfect 3's were added at the eight and ninth. On the homeward journey ho slightly sliced his drive into a pothole, and then, with a magnificent niashie recovery, reached the green. At \ the twelfth he slightly pulled his drive into the rough, but, after s a fine approach, holed out for 4. Going to the thirteenth he sliced his approach and then missed a two yard putt for 4. At the fourteenth, 516 yards, a brilliant second with the baffy found the green. But he missed 'a yard putt for 4. At the fifteentli, a perfect approach was followed by a deft and easy putt. The six- I teenth was ■ faultless. At the seventeenth, '436 yards, the road, hole which ruined many cards, Kirkwood clrove gloriously and was pinhigh with his iron. A brilliant cut with the niblick' lofted him within safe putting distance. At the eigtheenth his drive found an ashen crossroad, but fine approach and two good putts saw him hole out. His card was:—Outwards: 4, 3, 4, 5, 5, 4, 5, 3, 3—36; Homewards: 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 3, 4, 4, 4—37; total 73. . Kirkwood's steadiness was an marked contrast with the erratic form of some of the others who occupied leading places .^halfway through the championship, Ray" taking 81, Hutchinson 79, and M'Lean 82. The aggregates at the end of tho-fcbird! round were: Barnes, Herd, 222; Kirkwood, Massey, 223; Wethered', 225; Hutchinson, Kerrigan, 226;-Duncan, 227; Paul Hunter, 229; Boomer, 230; Holland, 232; Mitchell, 233; Joan Taylor, 235: Like many olden.1 and more experienced championship players, Kirkwooa's fourth round, pla,yed in sultry heat, spoilt the strong position he held at the end of the third round. At the second hole he sliced his drive. He made a good second with his wood from the wxigih, but found a pothole. At tfie third he had to make a niblick shot from a pothole, and, had hard luck with putts. Fiery groans accounted for his bad figures at the fifth and seventh. Homewards he played beautifully until the sixteenth, narrowly, missing a putt for three at the fourteenth. At the sixteenth a pulled drive left him in a ..bush, necessitating playing backwards. A good approach was spoilt by missing an eight«en-inch putt. At both the last two holes /ha slipped a stroke on his approaches. His card was : Outwards—4, 5, 5, 4, 6, 4, S, 3, 4—40; hbmeward«r-4i3. 4,4', 4, 4, 6, 5, 6—39; total, 79. • ■ ■
Wetheyed and Hutchinson tied with 296. Kirkwood's total was 302. Wethered and Hutchinson will play off to-morrow.
