GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SEASON.
It would appear that: the J. C. Williamson directors may: .be .warmly congratulated on the success in Australia of the brilliant Revivals, costly and elegant,'of the principal works of 7.those illustrious collaborateurs,- Gilbert: and Sullivan. A prominent' critic,: writing on the subject; remarks!: "And through it all, the music of Sullivan is an everlasting j°y- The delights of the ,'lolanthe and 'The Gondoliers' airs and choruses will never' pall. The music of 'The ■Mikado' contains just that , Japanesy tang that goes with the costumes. From f fairies and British peers, you turn to dresses and quaint suggestions of old Nippon. The next night you are translated to the deck of a man-of-war in 'H.M.S. Pinafore.'. Then came 'The Pirates of Penzanee,' a comical contrast, to be followed by 'The Yeoman of the Guard,'- which is in places dosoly allied to grand opera,. Another dainty conception is 'Princess Ida,' delightfully whimsical and masterly musical in harmonies and alluring melodies.1 A wonderful partnership that jointly composed a series of high-class light operas that are i likely' to endure, not for a period, but for all time." The Wellington season of eighteen nights, during which -seven operas will be presented; will commence Saturday next with "The .Gondoliers," of which five performances will,bo given. This will be followed by "The Mikado" for four nights. The . box -.plans for these'operas will be : - opened at the Bristol Piano Company on Thursday inorniog u(uct.. ■ ''.- •'■';■ •."/."' ■•"'._
