CITY ESTIMATES
TOTAL OVER £260,000
RATE FOR THE YEAR-,
The estimates for the year 1921-22 are to be presented to Thursday night's meeting, of the City ..Council, and in. all probability the new rates will then be struck. In view of the big increase in the city valuations, it is expected that tlie'rates for the current financial year 'will produce an appreciable amount of additional revenue. It is understood that the estimates will amount to between £260,000 and £270,----000. This is slightly more than last year, because Miramar and Karon have amalgamated, with the city since the previous estimates were presented. Owing to tho stringency of the financial situation, care has been exercised in tho framing of the estimates. The aim has been to keep expenditure down as much as possible, and yet, at the same time, make provision for keeping various activities going efficiently. It is likely that certain works, for which no allocation has been made in the estimates, will be done during the coming months out of capital expenditure. With the exception of the Orongorongo water tunnel, none of the works sanctioned at the big loan poll field a few months ago have been started. The City Council have up to the present been uriablo to raise any but a very small portion of the £1,700,000 odd authorised, but as soon as it is possible to float a, portion of the money a commencement will be made with some of tho important works. Funds for carrying on the operations at Orongorongo were borrowed from tho electric-lighting department.
