CANTERBURY C.C. v. WELLINGTON CO.
Play 'in tho annual telegraphic fixture between, the above clubs was resumed promptly at 6 p:m. ou Saturday, and the fact that it was tho 18th June prompted the question at 52, Cuba-streot, "Will this evening provide a Waterloo for Wellington?" Unfortunately, after an hour's play, a fault in the wire—possibly due to the week-end gale—caused a cessation of hostilities for tho rest of the evening, as all efforts made during the ensuing three hours to regain touch with the Canterbury Club proved futile. Consequently very little progress was mado on ■ Saturday evening. By' the use of a telephone at this end, the clubs were able to exchange greetings at 11 p.m., when it was unanimously, agreed to resume play at 6 p.m. on Saturday next, Mt being understood that a wire will bo available at that hour. The local club has good prospects afc boards 7 and 9, as Mr. Foiihy and Mr. Purchas each v/in a minor piece immediately on resuming. The bout at board 11 between H. G. Lee (ex-Somerset County rep.) and H. J. Quarrel! (ox-Kent County rep.) was drawn on the previous Saturday, as mentioned in our last week's report. Several very interesting and_ instructivefinishes should be witnessed in tho final stages next \ Saturday evening. Five 'members of the Working Men's Club aro taking part in the above match, and the club will therefore probably ask for a week's postponement of (the.inter-club fixture that is scheduled to be played at Ngaio next Saturday.
