CLAIMS OF TEACHERS.
A proposal placed before the./ Secon- ■ ary Schools Conference by Mi 69 N. E. Coad was "that tho differentiation between men's and women's salaries is too great, both in regard to entrants and other grades." Tho opinion was expressed by the mover that women should commence at the same salaries as tho men, while there were many case.; hi which women in the primary schools were bettor off than thoso in tho secondary schools. Such a stato of affairs was not encouraging to women desiring to take ,up secondary school Mr. T. R. Cresswoll (Wellington) explained that at a conference- to which the AUnistor invited teacher?, both mon and women, of "all grad<* pt . schools, tha question of. salines was discussed... It was agreed r^r the- conference that the equitjiblo proportions were 4 to 5 in the lower grade's, 3 to 4 in tho middle grades, and 2 to 3 m the upper grades. The scale of pay drawn up by' the inspectors was really a iitjle n\ore genfvous to women. Miss King (tnveroargill) expressed -sympathy with the remit, but. Miss Gibson pointed out that, as the responsibilities of men and women were totally different, women ooukl only, expect salaries, in proportion. ' ■ • The remit was negatived. Under tho heading of _ "Status and Salaries of Teachers, motions wore carried ns follow:— , "That tin additional grant should be. given (at least equivalent to that of heads of Departments) to Ifirr,t..asrastants in secondary schools," and "that tho setting up of "a transfer or promotion, boardwill be detrimental to the interests .of both teachers ond iiupijs of secondary Ebhools throughout1 New-Zealand.." ..'.■■:
