TO PROTECT BRITISH INDUSTRIES

RESOLUTIONS IN PARLIAMENT.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPISIGHM (AUSTRALIAN ■ NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received May 13, 9 a,.m.) LONDON, 12th May. In the House of Commons the Government declined to accept an amendment by Trevelan Thompson' exempting from duty manufactures from the Dominions on the ground that dumped goods might be sent to the Dominions for re-export here. The-, amendment was lost by 142 votes to 27. The anti-dumping resolutions were carried at 4.30 in the morning by ' 118 votes to 36, after the closm-e had been applied. -[The two Government resolutions dealing with key industries and dumping are temporary measures, pending the introduction of a Bill which will.be based on them. The first resolution imposes during five years an ad valorem duty of 33 1-3 pei- cent, on a large number of specified»articlos, notabl- optical £ instruments, magnetos,, arc-lamp carbons, synthetic organic chemicals, tunpsten, and o_ther_ rare metals. The second resolu- ' tion imposes a similar duty, in addition to any existing duty on -oods wholly or /partly manufactured abroad and offered in Britain at prices below the cost of production or prices which, owing to depreciated foreign currencies, are below the prices at which similar goods could profitably be manufactured in Britain.]
