tO TB« EDITOR. Sit,—l notice a controversy on ttos subject of eels. Recently English naturalists have been publishing their discoveries, and their publications have been causing a consia'erable amount of discussion. If lecturers in detailing _ the latest theories announce that these views are the studies and id«as of others, then, they are justified in lecturing to the public, but, unless they give this explanation, and if they have themselves not been able to do original research, they should be careful not to make authoritative* statements. Without refuting any theories put forward, original research is worth a ton of theory. Please, therefore, let the experts ' .explain why, if eels only-breed in the 200 fathom depth, how it is that at" Pahautahui can be found undoubted elvers about two inches long, ami almost transparent, in the Pahautanui Creek? Abo please explain, why there are 110 eels in the Taupo Lake, whose water is quite fresh enough to drink, and also does anybody know anything about the habits of the lamprey, which seems to make an annual visitation to our rfvetß,' — I am, etc., 0.
