GERMAN SHIPBUILDING
THE MERCANTILE FLEET.

LONDON, Ist May. Mr. G. Renwick, the Daily Chronicle's correspondent at Hamburg, says that after visiting the shipping centres, he finds that the leaders of the industry are of the opinion that Germany's mercantile fleet within a decade will be at least 5,250,000 tons—that is, equal to Germany's pre-wax fleet, though it is only half a million tons at presem). The docks once more are bustling with life, though most of the ships ar6 being chartered. Experts think it is possible within five years to double Germany's shipbuilding.•• capacity. Apart from the Government grant devoted to shipbuilding, various companies are devoting big sums out of, their profits to the same object. The/chief lines are concentrating on the South American trade.
