THE SHOOTING SEASON
The shooting setson for native and imported game opona on Monday morning, 2nd May. Native gome in the Wellington district consists of grey duck, teal, and blade sw^n, and imported game is Australian and California^ quail, pheasants, and hares. Grey ducks and Californian quail are reported to be fairly plentiful in several parts of the Wellington district, as also are hares. Native pigeons are still protected. T,he season for taking opossums begins on Ist June. Tho fishing season, which closed to-day, is said to havo been one of the best for very many years past, largely owing to the systematic heavy stocking, of tho streams by tho Acclimatisation Society. Gk>od catches of rainbow trout have been mad© from the Maowbango River, and brown trout from ihe Manawatu and Makakahi Rivers. Satisfactory catches are also said to have been made in other streams. '
