HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT
The weekly report from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, received by the Department of Agriculture, dated 23rd instant, gives the following information :—
Meat.—Market dull, small demand for all descriptions, and prices lower.. Quotations : English mutton, Is s^d; lamb, 2s o£d; Scotch mutton, Is 7d ; Argentine chilled beef, hinds lOjd, fores s£d; New Zealand ox beef, hinds 6-Jd, force 3|d. No demand for inferior quality and cow beef. Very •little free New Zea-laiid mutton on market. Quotations : Lightweight BJd, heavy-weight 8d; New Zealand' lamb from America-, Is Id; very little free lamb available, Is 2d.' Butter.—Less demand, owing to forward purchases last week on account of possible transport strike. Danish : Quiet, at reduced price, £12 6s to £13 10s (2s 3-id to 2s 4-Jd lb). Expect price to decline further in a few weeks. The price of Government butter has been revised 22nd April to sth May. New Zealand first and second grade, £13 2s per cwt. (2s 4d per lb); Australian, £12 10s (2s 3d); Argentine, £11 5s (2s); New Zealand whey, £11 12s (2s 0|d); Australian third-grade, £11 (Is Hid). Official quotations are : New Zealand, £13 5d to £13 10s (2s "id to 2s 4}d); Australian, £12 13s to £12 18s (2s 3d to 2s 3id); Argentine, £11 4s to £11 18s (2s to 2s l£d); English, £16 18s (2s lOd); Irish (new), £13 10s to £14 2a 4jd (2s 6d). Cheese. —Market firm, with a moderate demand. English, £7 to £9 per cwt (Is 3d to Is 7£di) Canadian, white, £7 10s to £7 14s (Is 4d to Is 4£d, coloured, £8 to £8 2s (Is sd): New Zealand, white, £6 14s to £7 2s (Is 2^d to Is 3d), coloured, £7 16s to £8 2s (Is Aid to Is sd); Australian, white, £6 14s to £6 18s (Is 2^d to la 2|d), coloured, £7 14s to £7 13s (Is 44d to Is 4Jd). Price for white expected to be maintained, but reduction in case ct coloured with increased- supplies. Canadian coloured, shipment by first stear.]«r, being offered at £5 12s to £6 14s per cwt (Is 2d peer lb) c.i.f.
Casein.- -Market continues, weak, and prices declining. Nominal quotations are :—Argentine, Lactic, £57. Rennet . English, £83; French, £70; New Zealand and Australia, £63 12s. Sellers are asking for offers.
Hemp.—Manila market quiet but firm. little offering, and business is difficult. New- Zealand market very dull. Spot higtvpoiita sold £40, afloat £39 f;er ton. Value of fair not over £30 to £37 per ti|, though nominally quotations unchanged.' Stocks Great Britain 31st Maroh 675 tons, against 925 iast year, aiid 350 i.revious year. Wool.—--Bradford market had improved- tone tills-week. Export of top* and yarn to Anferica helped to clear spinners' stocks, and, with slight mijvemert of piece goods, position is better.' Tops, prices are fiimer : 64's (ni«rim>), os per lb; s&V(halfbieci), 2s 3d per lb; 40' a (corse crossbred), Is per lb. ■pWt.--FiTst shipment Australian arrived this week, and first day's prices very high. Later prices are already lower, and heavier drop anticipated next week, when larger consignments arrive 1. Honey.—Market very dull. Value of first grade New Zealand about 70s to 80s per cwt (7Jd to B^d perlb) for really white. Low grade is i abundant, and not m demand. Value ibout 40s per cwt (4^d per lbj. Note.—New Zealand beef referred to will bo old season's, probably depreciated by storage and handling.
