WORK FOR RETURNED MEN

TO THE EDITOR. ! Sir,—Would you lpndly allow me gpace in your columns' to draw attentipn to. the faot that there are a great num,bpr of returned soldiers out pf work in this city. This sorry state of tilings is caused, I understand,, !by dismissal of tpmpopary clerks from various Government offices, and no attempt being made by ifyp Qoyernmont to makp worjs for these men. Qf course they are advised to go to fhq Repatriation office, but of what use is, thfit? Private employers are dismissing majiy men frpm tfieir employ, and whi»t chance h,as the Repatriation Dopartnieut got of "placing" the dismissed Government temporary plerks? Is it the Government's desire to find employment for the new arrivals from JSngland and have no care for their ov/n men who helped to make New Zealand's good name, and. who, this time six years agp, wero preparing to. sacritio their all for their country? I see by to-night Post that the _ railwaying!? at Taihape are also complaining abput married New ZalanSers being dismissed in favour of unmarried Englishmen. Candidly, sir, is this playing the game? I cer^ tainly don't think po. -Surely the cpuntry's first di(ty is to its own men, and then doing what i(; can to help the new arrivals. Will the British Government assist dischargee] New Zealand soldiers to got to England. and then help to place them? I don't think so.

It is regrettable that »» many of our returned soldiers should bo seeking employment in vain, and I sincerely trust that the Returned Soldiers' Association, the Central Progress League, Welfare League, and other bodies will knka this matter up, and at least endeavour t« convinco the Government that it would only be doiDg its duty in finding employmajjt for the men who stood by tho country in the country's need. —I am, etc., EMPLOYED DIGGER. 18th April.
