HARRIERS

OPENING OF THE SEASON,

The 1921 harrier season was opened at Lyall Bay on Saturday. Over 120 members from various city clubs were present, this number easily constituting a record. Mr. A. W. Travers, in the unavoidable absence of Mr. R. W M'Villy, asked the Mayor to open the season. Mr. Luke, in doing so, referred to the clean life necessary for tnoee who participated in the sport, and emphasised the fact'that clean sport made better men, and improved the standard of citizenship. He hoped the season would be a success from all points of view, and that each arid* every member would be a credit to his club. Mr. W. H. Bennett, president of the recently-formed Wellington Harriers 1! Club, Mr. A. Marryatt (Olympic Council), and Mr. W. A. Morpeth (ono of the first moirbers of the Wellington Harriers), also spoke. A short run was then held along the beach, over the Miramar hills, and back to the carsheds, when the pack reformed for the run home. —a distance of about; 440 yards. The run-in was won by C. Campbell, W. Scatehard being second, and K. Griffon third. Amongst *he runners was Mr. H. J. Pollock, wkv, as a boy, ran in the first harrier race held in Wellington.
