DEMAND FOR MINERS
CAREFUL SELECTION OF
CORNISHMEN.
(FISH DDR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) .; . . ;•". LONDON,. 2nd February. Miners in Cornwall have welcomed the announcement that the New Zealand Government are prepared to alleviate somewhat the acute distress in Cornwall owing to unemployment by taking a large number of practical gold miners for work in tho Dominion. Regret, however, was caused by the fact that the original order for 400 had been reduced to lt)0. TKe matter was brought up at the meeting of the Mid and West Cornwall Unemployment Committee last week, and the' secretary, .'stated that although the order had been • modified, he believed the original order was merely.being held in abeyance until tho New Zealand Government could see tho type of men sent out. It was important that only the right men should be sent. This was imperative both in the interest of the men themselves and the country. There was no work to offer in the mining division, and men could not live on 15s per week; something must be done to assist them. "As soon-as they see the type of miner we send," added the secretary, "we think the order will come for' another 300."
Care will be taken in the selection made, and towards this end the men will be seen by a committee of practical mining men, who will make recommendations according to the qualifications of the applicants. The order is to apply to the Cornish mining district only.
