Tie engagement is announced of Miss Mary MacKinnon, fourth daughter of Inspector and Mrs. W. H. MacKinnon, PaJmerston North, to Mr. Fredrick Nicholson, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Nicholson, Te Whiti-street, Kilbirnie.
Mrs. Canning, of Petone, a sister of Mrs. Bishop, several of whose children lost their lives in a fire at Wangaaiui on Thursday right, has left fox Wangahui. It was only in July last that Mrs. Bishop's husband died.
Some time ago a recipe for cleaning a white velour hat was required, and one now appears in an Australia? paper which ie highly recommended. It is as follows: —First of all remove the headlining, and if the inside of the hat is at all soiled rub it well with a cloth soaked in petrol, changing the surface repeatedly. Thsn make a thin paste of French chalk and powdered block magnesia in equal parts, mixed with petrol. Rub this paste well into the hat all over, and let it dry thoroughly on the hat. Then brush out all the podwer with a perfectly clean white brush, brushing every way till the hat is free from powder.
