WOMEN IN PRINT

The "community spirit" is being much talked about at present, and is one of the finest things in the world when properly exercised and directed. It formed a very pleasant feature of the carnival of last week, when women of various denominations and societies combined happily together to work hard for "everybody's boys." It was an added pleasure that such a large number of "Terries" an/ Cadets and" their friends attended each evening, and sympathetio pleasure was felt by most of the helpurs with tMe mothers of the highly successful company from the "Technical School. The young n.c.0., who appeared each time for the various trophies on Saturday night had quite a number of "shake ha>nds" with His Excellency the Gover-nor-General, and, in all, a fairly lengthy conversation. Both men and women workers are to be congratulated on the success of the carnival, which has brought before the citizens of Wellington and other iiities as well the cause of the Senior Cadets and Territorials, and the necessity for cultivating a broadminded, educated citizenship in all of them.

Miss Archibald presided at the monthly meeting of the Levin Memorial Home Committee held at the Home, Ber. hampore. The matron reported that the children were all well. Two girls having left to go to live with relatives, this month two children were admitted to fill the vacancies. Gifts received from the following were gratefully acknowledged:—Mrs. Barltrop, Mrs. Christie, a large sack of flannel from the Red Cross, £1 Island Bay, and 12s 6d anonymous.

It is not often that the public has the opportunity of viewing the cqast defences, but such was the.case on Saturday afternoon, when members of No. 3 Company, N.Z.G.A., held an "At Home" at Fort Dorset. The arrangements were made under Captain Abel, 0.0. of the Company. Those members who attended brought friends with them, and, with rifle shooting, gun practice, a tabloid athletio meeting, followed by afternoon tea, a most enjoyable time was experienced. At the conclusion of the day the Rifle Shooting Belt (presented by the Wellington Navals' Boating Society), and the gold medal (donated by Messrs. Lloyd for the runner-up) were presented by Mrs. Abel, the winner being Bombardier E. Short, and the run-ner-up Gunner Martin. After the presentation wei'e made three hearty cheers were given for Captain and Mrs. Abel.

Mrs. W. Luke was a passenger .to Sydney and Hobart by the Moeraki on Thursday.

Mrs. H. Abraham (Khandallah) is visiting Mrs, J. M'Kellar, New Plymouth. .

Mr. and "Mrs. Sydney Kirkcaldi© are leaving shortly for a visit to Mount Egmont, and a tour of other towns in the North.

A well-organised and popular entertainment was opened on Saturday afternoon by Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P. All arrangements were made by Mrs. Dave Kennedy, of Brooklyn, and her committee, in aid of the Residential Nursery, and the function was held at' the residence of Miss and the. Messrs. Crabtree, of Ohiro-road, Brooklyn. All kinds of attractions had been provided for the afternoon, and as the weather was all that could bo desired, many interested friends were present. Assisting with the programme were Miss Dorothy Sounders and some of her pupils, Miss Eileen Driscol!, Miss Elsie Kelle, Miss Nellie Simpson (flautist), Mr. Dixon (pianist), Mrs. Bates. Mr. Goudie, Mr. Alright, and Miss Crump. The 1 Highland dancing of the Misses Currie, with pipe music by Pipemaster Patterson, were also greatly_ appreciated -items. A dancing competition was judged by Miss Dorothy Saunders, and a number of .cookery exhibits were judged by Miss Rennie. Members of the Residential NurseryCommittee were among some of those who were present, and the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed.

The members of St. Joseph's Branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society recently entertained the Catholic officers and men from the H.M.S. Chatham, in St. Joseph's Hall. The President, Mr J. Hyland, extended a hearty welcome to Lieut.-Commander Agar, V.C., D.5.0., R.N.; Mr. Farrell, R.N.; C.P.O. Downing; E.N., and about 24 sailors. During the evening items were given by the following.—Misses A. and M. Ward, May and M. Doherty, E. Kennedy, C. Connors, M. Dillon, K. Quin, Messrs. F. Sligo, P. Jepson, E. Higgins, J. Hyland, F. Dwan, L. Jansen, and two of the sailors. After supper had been handed round, which was in oharge of Bliss U Bezar, a dance waa held, which was much appreciated. At the conclusion, Mr. Downing, officer in charge, thanked all present on behalf of the men for the pleasant evening that had been extended to them. Those in charge wish to thank all who generously contributed items and refreshments. Mr. R. Dwyer, secretary, was responsible for the arrangements of the evening.

A particularly successful and sociable gathering was held by the Lower Hutt Technical School Tennis Club on Friday night, when a. "social" was given at the Lyceum Hall. Visitors from Wellington and Petone were present, as well as a large attendance of local members. Mr. W. J. Melody delivered the presidential address, during the course of which he congratulated the club on the success it had achieved during the past season, and referred in eulogistic terras to the work of the hon. secretary, Mr. W. T. Nelson, to whoso efforts, said the speaker, the progress made was chiefly due. Intermingled with the dancing, vocal and instrumental items were contributed by Misses Ginger, Jelly, Casey, Remington, James, and Messrs. Watson, Young, and Turner. The supper arrangements were und>er the supervision of Misses Sheppard and M. Evans, and Mesdames Melody and Cameron were the chaperons. Messrs. E. Hally and H. Leggett carried out the duties of M.C.'s, and Mrs. Pollock, of Petone, supplied the dance music. 'During the evening the club champion, Miss O. M. Sheppard, was presented with a gold medal. In the competition section prizes were won by Miss Diamond and Mr. E. L. Jones.

As in past years, there was a largo, number of lady visitors from town and from the surrounding districts to witness the final shoot for the Champion Belt and King's Prize. Owing to Parldameni sitting the Ministers and their wives were unable to be present. His Excel tency the' Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe, with their staff motored out, and were received by Colonel and Mrs. R. J. Collins, who conducted them to the range, where they watched the firing with much interest. After the championship had been decided, the ViceRegal party wore entertained by Mrs. B. J. Collins at the Officers' Mass Room, which was prettily decorated for the occasion. Among those present wei'o: Mrs. John Barton • (Trenthain), Mrs. Powles, Mrs. Brock, Mrs. H T. Marshall, Mrs. T. J. King, Miss Thurston (matron, Trentham Hospital), and the wive 3 and lady friends of the executive and staff. After tea an adjournmerit was made to the dais. Her Excel* lency then presented the medals, cups, and shields to the prizewinnei's, adding a few kinddy words of congratulation to each. At the request of the competitors Lord Jolliooe handed to Mi's. R. J. Collins a handsome silver salver, as a present from the marksmen. Cheers were given for Mrs. Collins, and the meeting concluded with hearty oheere for, Tiwir Excellencies.
