STREET ILLUMINATION
Sir, —At tho present time a wonderful contrast of good and bad street illumination exists on Jjambton-quay. Above the . portion of the quay where the tram track is being re-laid, a temporary system of improved lighting has been installed. What a contrast this forms with the remainder of the dark, dreary quay, where a solitary standard here and there feebly throws ite weak yellow rays downwards on to the street and footpaths. To any one who has visited' Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin, the fearfully inadequate system of lighting the Empiro City by night is vividly realised. I know that Chriatchurch has hydro-generating plants in operation—so will Wellington have in a few years. Why'wait till the power is available before the much-need-ed improvements are planned and carried out? Do it now, is the policy Wellington sadly needs. Have everything ready so that we will be waiting for the powernot the power waiting for us. Flood tho main streets with light at night, and it will bo safe for all, the pedestrian, motorist, tram drivers, everyone.—l am, etc., E.A.C. 28th February.
