MASON'S GARDENS

The .following statement regarding the threatened cutting up of Mason's Gardens, Lower Hutt, was made by Mr. I*. Mitchell, M.P., secretary of the Central Progress' League, to-day : —" We are very disappointed at the statement made by the Mayor with reference to Mason's Gardens, but finance is no doubt the stumbling-block.. While recognising the financial stringency at the present time, we think it a national calamity that these beautiful gardens are not saved for the people. They contain specimens of the world's choicest shrubs and flowers, admitted to be the. finest collection in the Southern Hemisphere, which have been collected and cared for at great cost in labour and money. They are now to be chopped down to make room for the cow. It is true the gardens are not handy to Wellington city at present, but future electric services will make them so, and when the Hutt Valley becomes thickly populated residentiary, as it certainly will be, the people will be grateful.if we can save these fine gardens and playing area for them. If the Government-or the City Council or other pulflfo body will not sa.ve them, have we not public-spirited men or women who willf 1£ so, t&eir name will live for all time. We thank The Post for the sympathetic interest it has taken' in the matter, and hope these gardens will, yet bo saved for posterity "
