NOTES AND COMMENTS

(SI "Bill LANCiIOT.")

The circuit of autumn meetings will be continued at Dannevirke on Wednesday and Thursday.

A shorter distance than a mile and three-quarters would probably suit Signysian better. He has just on astono more than when he won at Woodville, and the extra two furlongs will probably find him out. With 51b apprentice allowance Transmission will only have to carry 10.4, which is 121b more than she won with at Woodville.

Tho Maiden Plate field includes Kuia, who ran second to Strathspey at Awapuni. Sunb'ath, second to Royal Gift at Pahiatua, is another engaged with recent form to recommend her.

Duo and Gasbag, the two best three-year-olds of the year, will be given a. race in the President's Handicap to sharpen them up for Easter. engagements. At their top form they would have none the best of it with Eouen over six furlongs.'- Murihiku and Caricature should be prominent.

American Beauty won over seven furlongs at Ashhurst, and scored again at Wanganui. If fcho does not get much rehandicap she may beat Verbosity, who is a good sort, and on the improve. Idle Talk, top weight in the Cup, dots not appear to be galloping as well as sh* was. She failed 'to get placed with 7.0 in the Wanganui Stakes. Ponte, who has had a let-tip, Mid Railand, who beat Lovwnatch among others on the Eccond day at Woodville, may be tho best of them.

Two smart fillies in Fulsome and Soldier's Love head the lot in the Juvenile Handicap. Dissertation, second to Soldier's Love at Woodville, comes in on 111b better terms, and may reverse positions.

If Bonetter could reproduce her Riccarton spring form she would beat the lot opposed to her in the Rakaitai Welter. Prince Martian may be the best of the others.

If Tout Bon, who won at Gisborne, is reserved for the Makirikiri Welter, he may trouble Admiration.

Mr. J. B. Reid, the well-known North Otago studmaster, returned to New Zealand this month from England. During his stay in the Old Country he purchased two horses, who are expected to arrive here very soon. One of them is the three-yeav-old colt Tractor, by Tho Tetrarch from Gravitation, a sistsr to the successful English sire Wiilia^n the Third, by St. Simon—Gravity, by Wisdom. This colt, who was secured at a modest price, has no t public form to recommend him, but his breeding is highclass, and the fact that he is by the most sensational horse of recent years in England will gain him extra attention. It is possible that he will be raced before he is retired to the stud. Mr. Reid's other purchase is Paper Money, by Greenback —Epping. Rose, by Eager— Briar} by Common—Lady Blankney, by Hermit. Greenback, who is a popular sire, is by St. Frusquin—.Evergreen, by Ben d'Or—lvy Spray, by Galliard—Wild Ivv > b.V Springfield. As a two-year-old Paper Money started seven times, fot four wins, a third, and a fourth. At three years he v/as second in his opening engagement, and then finished third to .Grand Parade and Buchan in the Derby. He was unplaced in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, after which he won two more races, winding up with an unplaced performance.

Lovematch, War Baby, and Askari,, winners at Wanganui, were improved with the racing they had at Woodville. Client ended his career oft Saturday on the track where he had scored some of his most notable successes. He was bred by Mr. T. A. Duncan, by Elevation—Bonheur, and was foaled in 1911. He was trained by F. Tilleyat Fordell for Mr. W. Duncan. Client ran a remarkably good race in the Cup on the first day of the meeting, all except fche absolute winner. Probably the reason why he lasted .so lons on the Turf was the fact that he was not asked to race until he was three years old, and then did not race till March: Hewon four times out of six starts, and was second and third in his other attempts. As a four-year-old he only started once, when he ran third, in the Empire Handicap at Wanganui. As a five-year-old he started' nine- times. His four wins included the President's Handicap at Manawatu, Marton Cup, aud Wanganui Cup. As a six-year-old he won four times out of ten starts. He was successful in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham in the spring, also in the Wanganui Cup and Stakes. He also won the Hawkes Bajj; Cup, which was one of his best performances, and ran second in tho Manawatu Cup. At seven years of age he won only one race^ —the Winter Oats at Trentham on his last appearance —out of fourteen starts, fie also ran second in the Connollyl Handicap to Ma£ queteur, to whom Client was conceding a stone. Last season the Elevation gelding scored twice out of eleven starts. He won the Spring Handicap at Wanganui on his first appearance, and the Waganui Stakes. He also ran second in the Manawatu Cup. During th» present season he ran second to an old 1 opponent in Red Ribbon in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding. He won the Manawatu Cup, but failed to get a place in three starts at Trentham. In the Wanganui Cup, making his fifth appearance, he just failed to win for the third time. His record reads as follows:—
