PRICE OF MEAT
BEDUCTIONS IN HASTINGS
AND NAPIER,
Numerous inquiries have been made lately why, in view of the drop in the prices of cattle and sheep, there has not been a corresponding fall in tho retail price of' meat generally. The Wellington Prices Investigation Tribunal, with the object of making inquiries on the question, has visited Hastings. Several conferences were held with retail butchers there, and it was found that some of the butchers had bought stock at the former high prices and had not yet •been able to dispose of it. Further, throe of four small butchers, including a returned soldier, were not finding their calling a very remunerative one. Subsequently, howeVer, a deputation informed the tribunal that a reduction in. the price of meat would be made as from Ist March, with prospective further reductions should there be another drop in the price of cattle and sheep. A visit was also made to Napier, and it ■was found that a reduction in retail prices had been advertised. The tribunal will be inquiring shortly into the question as it affects Wellington City.
