NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL

SEVERAL IMPORTANT DECISIONS,

The counoil of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association held its quarterly meeting last night, Mr. E. Denniston presiding over a large attendance of delegated. Applications were received from ■ tho Canterbury) Taranaki, and Marlborough Associations, askinp that the 1921 New Zealand championships should be played at Christehurch, New Plymouth, and Blenheim respectively. The Taranaki application was withdrawn, and-on a vote being taken it was decided by 27 votes to 12 to hold the next championship meeting in Christehurch. ■

The following recommendations from ■the Management Committee were adopted: (1) " That the council affirms the principle of granting financial assistance to properlyconstituted junior or schools' associations by subsidising £1 for £1 up to £5 a year, grants made to such associations by the controlling provincial associations^' and (2) " that, in the future, when visiting tennis teams play matches against provincial teams the association that controls the matches must accept responsibility for the expenses of management and entertaining." • ■ ' ■

Considerable discussion followed * motion by Mr. Lord (Marlborough), seconded by Mr. G. Goldie, that the application of the Waikaio Lawn Tennis' Association for affiliation with the Dominion Association be accepted.. Mr. Goldie stated that thirty-two grass courts were being formed at Hamilton, and there were in all thirty eight olubs, with over 1300 members, in the proposed Waikato district; but only five of the thirty-eight clubs belonged to the Auckland Association, which; from that, did not seom to have'done much to encourage the game. He strongly supported the application. Mr. Keesing was of opinion' that Waikato should become | a sub-association. Mr. Ross Gore (Canterbury) also opposed the motion, pointing out that the proposed association would practically divide the Auckland district in two, being thrust as a wedge between the northern and southern parts of it. Ho felt that the Waikato olubs could get all the advantages _ and encouragement they needed from being loyal to the Auckland Association.

Finally a vote resulted in favour of the motion by 31 votes to 12.
