BENEFITS UNDER THE BILL INCREASED

PROGRESS OP THE MEASURE

(BNIT»S PRBSS .'.SSOCIATION.—OOPTRISSI.)

(IUCTBAUAN • K6W IBAI.AND CADLt ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, S4tii February.

In the House of Commons in Committee on the Unemployment Bill, Mi". J. R. Clynes moved an increase in the benefit to 40s for the head of a family and 25s for others. This was not a fanciful, extravagant figure, he said, 40s was only equal to 15s before the war. It was the business of the Government to End the money. Dr. Macnamara said the scheme would hopelessly bankrupt the insurance fund. ; Sir DqnaJd Maclean, said he could not vote for the increase to 40s, as it would wipe out the'whole scheme, but favoured 20s. Mr. G. N. Barnes, Sir Edward Carson, and others urged the Government to increase the benefit to 20s. Dr. Macnamara consented, and Mr. Clynes withdrew his amendment.

The House raised the women's benefit from 15s to 16s, and the Unemployment Bill, as amended, was reported to the House.
