HOW THE TELEPHONE WAS INVENTED

A -romance of the evolution of the telephone was revealed by tho inventor, Dr. A. Graham Bell, at a meeting at Derby recently, of the oommittec of the National College of Teachers of the Deaf.

His early study led him to the conviction . that evei-y deaf child should be taught to speak, but he did not believe that it could learn to read the tips with any great profit. That scepticism prompted him to produce a machine that, aliould .hear for tho deaf. ■

It required the active persuasion of the deaf young lady who afterwards became Ilia wife to convince liim that speech reading was possible. He thus found that the machiuo which ho proposed was notnecessary, and it ultimately evolved into the telephone. ' . . One of the most beautiful things to him .to-day, ho said, was to sco his wife talking with her grandchildren, not cno of whom knew tho manual alphabet or a single deaf or dumb sign.
