WANGANUI MEETING

NOTES ON THE SPORf

(111 TELEGRAPH.) (Fi'om "Sir Lancelot.")

WANGANUI, 24th February. The Wanganiii Jockey Olub's Autamn Meeting opened under favourable weather conditions. Recent rains had improved the racing track, which was in good order. Valencia and Sweet Song were' taken out of the Wiritoa Hack' Race, leaving in eight ruim-ois. Backers made a, good start by s-electirig Ngata and Empyrean. The latter and Vindictive were prominent for six furlongs, where, they were showing out clear of Ngata and Achilleon. At the distance Vindictive was still going strong in front. A hundTcd yards from home Ngata put in a claim, and won comfortably by a neck. Halcyon got up to beat Achillean for third, and Empyrean was next. War Loan jumped off badly, and ran last all the way. \ •

Crucelle, who went down well in her preliminary gallop, was always favourite for the Stewards' Handicap. I v the jump out Pa-sain" Through collided with another runner, and got about a chain the worst of it. Cmcelle, on the inside, began best, and at the mile post was allowing clear of 80-Peep, whose stable mate, Flight Commander, was abo well placed. -80-Poop hung on to Crucelle for seven , furlongs, and then Boas Wxeaih, always welliplaiced, tiied to overhaul the leaders. She could make 1 uo impression on Crucelle, and was beaten in the laat twenty yards by Passin' Through., who ' might have trouUled the winner but for th* accident at the start. 80-Peep and Voluble were next. Insurrection, making his first appearance in the colours of his trainer, was never prominent.

All the six acceptoi-s for the W«tm*re ■Hurdle Race paraded. Khartoum was a big favourite, carrying .nearly twice as much as was invested on Zola, a good second favourite. It was a peculiar race; Hautawa was first at the initial obstacle at the top of tho straight. He and Falshi.ff got a, big break to the next fencii a* the back of the course. The latter foil, and Hautawa was paxtly pulled up, allowing Khartoum to " lead. Hautawa, Khartoum, aad Zola were prominent at the stand. Along the back Zola took charge, aad won easily *frarr» Khartoum with Ngakamii, who Tan at the tail end, and covered more ground than any other runner in the race, third. 2ola, who won at Hawern, conceded his opponents ai good deal of weight. Ha.utfl.wa, fell at the last fence.

War Baby .and Halcyon were taken out of the Victory Welter Handicap. Ngata was brought out again, carrying 71b penalty. The ' .Tremthom-tra'ineld Halifax, who had been responsible for good track woTk here, wound up favourite. Passenger, an the inside, began best, but, after leaving the straight, was headed by Halifax, who had charge when the back of the course was reach-" od. Askari rushed through at'the six furlongs, and was at the head of affairs half a mile from home. Coniing to tha straight, Halifax and Askari closed on. the leader, who lasted long enough to win by three parts of a length. Ngain. (H. Gray), ridden out, was a. Wgth, away, with Explorer at the head of tho others. The Winner paid a ■dotiblafigure dividend, while supporters of tho favourite did not get their money back.

All started for the Cup. It was probably the best field that has yet contested 'the race. . Oratress finished up favourite, with Marqdeteur and Woody Glen beat backed 1 of the others. Bonnie Heather broke tile line, but before they had gone a furlong Oratress was showing the'way to Maioha and Lovematch. At four furlongs Simon took charge, and at the stand was leading Esperance, Lovematch, Rose Queen, Bonnie Maid, and Maipha, Idle Talk and Bonnie Heather being last. Racing along the back the order was practically the same. Rose Queen dropped into the ruck half a mile from home, where Lovematch showed o\it just clear of Esperanco. Lovematcli increased, her lead in the run to the straight, and.Won comfortably, by a, length and a half from Client, wlio came from a good way back and put up a good finishing run. Bonnie Maid was a good third and Marquetcur fourth. Neither .Woody Glen nor Dusky Eva was ever prominent.. The last to finish were Dusky Eve, Bonnie Heather, and Punka. The latter's poor display gre&tly. disappointed her connections, but it transpired that she had been galloped on. Lovematch reproduced her (form of lftst autumn, when she won the Hawkes Bay Cup,for Mrs. Perry. She srored'her first win to-day for Mr. H. H. Pliarazyn, who is at present in England.

Armorel was the only withdrawal from the. Juvenile Handicap. Tamateto} who was a screaming-hoi favourite, jumped out best, and was leading Scion and Sleeping Beauty when they had gone a furlong. The order was the same at the finish. Tamateta won under a good pull, with a good .deal in hand. Another of the Absurd tribe in Still Sea (Absurd— Seaspray) finished next to, the placed division. . Backers of the second horse got a much better price than those who supported tho winner.

.All the acceptors started for the Petre Hack Handicap. All C«rise (H. Oray) finished up a good favourite. Tivoli (Absurd —Eosecommon) failed tp join the field, and took no part in the race. Marble Bar, on the inside, begau best, and, with All Cerise and Stutter, comprised the leading division at the halfmile. At tho bend Stutter and All Oeriss still had command, Cool pan and War Baby being nest. The latter took command in the straight and won comfortably from Royal Exchange, who was badly filaced in the first part. It was the first win of War Baby (who formerly carried the Hijjhden colours) for Mr. J. J. Corry. tho Blenheim owner.

Prior to the start of the Flying Handicap Listowel bolted a round the reverse way. Ho was last in the race.- Early Dawn was, first out, with Nursing Sister nest. At the end of a furlong Inah had taken up tho running, being attended by Silver Link when they had sone half the distance. Tile two Taranaki representatives Were first into the stfaight.
