CARPENTERS' DISPUTE
DEMAND- FOR 3s. AN HOUR.
The hearing of the Wellington Cai-pen-tcrs' and Joiners' ind%istri'al dispute was commenced before the Conciliation Council this morning. The Commissioner' (Mr.; W. . Newton) ■ presided, and, the assessors were : Messrs. H. Mainland, A. M., Wilson, and E. S. Knight, (employers), 'and Messrs. J. Barrass, J. Verrall, . and F. Singleton , (employees). Mr. W Grenfell acted as agent for the employers. - , '
The union asked for a working week of. forty hours and a minimum rate of 3s par hour. >
The employers, in counter-proposals, asked for the Auckland award, so far as it is applicable to local conditions.
The morning was spent in dealing with applications by employers -for exemptions, and the men's demands 'Were discussed clause by clause this afternoon.
