AMERICA v. AUSTRALIA

VISITORS VICTORIOUS.

(tJNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT:) SYDNEY, 22nd January. The lawn tonnis matches were continued at Double Bay in fine, hot weather, and the attendance was 5000.

Johnston and Hawkes opened the piogramme, but the visitor was not seriously extended. "

In the succeeding match Tilden registered three-love in the first set against Brookes by his terrific service and lightning returns. Brookes, how-' ever, was always calm, and drew level at four-all, due chiefly to scientific net P-'ay. ,

The second set produced brilliant play. and Brookes, chopping and volleying up to international standard, won a great set.

The final set saw both the champions at their best in a neck-and-neck struggle, Tilden winning eventually, though he lacked the brilliancy of Friday's play. The doubles contest between Washburn aiid Johnston aiid- O'Hara Wood and Heath.revealed play of a high-class order, with the Americans : always superior. Wood again acquitted himself with distinction, especially in the rallies, but was not well supported by Heath Johnston's smashing returns and Washbum's excellent net play had the Aus traians "guessing" all the time, and the Americans won in three straight sets Results :—

Johnston defeated Hawkes. 6-3, 8-6.

Tilden defeated ■ Brpokes, 6-4, 6-8, 7-5. Washburn and .. Johnston defeated O'Hara Wood and Heath, 6-3, 9-7.. 6-1.
