EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISIONS.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Eastbourno Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Eastbourne, last night. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather), who' is on a- visit to Aus tralia, Mr. H. W. Shortt took tho chair. There woro also present Councillors W. Baine, W. H. G. Bennett, S. E. Fisher, T. H. Giles, C. L. Green, and T. W. Pilcher. . .
It .was resolved, to. take advantage of the offer: of tho Public Health Department to supply an, inspector under the Public Health Act, 1920. Tho Town Clerk reportod that there was a good, supply of. firewood in. the Municipal Depot at present, and that further supplies were coming to hand freely. Tho recommendation of the Works Committee that a footpath be formed in Marine-parade, from the coal yard to Rata-street, was adopted, the work to be put in hand in January. . The sand-drift on the Marine-parade was the subject of a. petition . from several residents. It was resolved that the removal of the drift, and some preventive measures, bo put in hand immediately.
A letter was received from Dr. F. W Mackonzie, directing tho council's attention to the great opportunities presented by the native bush. at tho back of Eastbourne for the formation of a scenic reserve. It,was resolved that Dr. Mackenzie be written to and thanked for his suggestions. ■
■ The Finance Committee's recommenda-" tioniwas adopted that half of the general rate be remitted to the Mutitai Tennis Club, the Rona Bay Tennis Club, and the Eastbourne Bowling Club. It was also decided to remit the rates on the Presbyterian Church property^ The Works Committee recommended. that the road in Totara'-street be cut back and - sufficient batter formed to enable a water channel'to be constructed on the hillside from the top to the bottom of Totara-street and thence to the sea, and that a consulting engineer be employed to supervise this work. After some discussion, it was resolved that the recommendation be adopted. , The Works Committee- also reported that it had ho recommendation to make in reference to the offer by Mr. C. B. Buxton to"sell his quarry in Muritai-road to the council. It was resolved to advise Mr. Buxton that the council cannot see ita wa.y clear- to tako advantage of his offer at present. ' t .
