The weather was ideal for the continuation of the cricket match England v. South Australia, in which South Australia made a 'first innings score of 118 and England had on© wicket down for 201 when stumps were drawn yesterday. To-day's attendance was 10,000. . Russell (101) and Heame (46) resumed batting to the bowling of Thurgarland and Phillips. The batsmen opened cautiously. Hearne was on the defensive, and his.fifty/took eighty minutes to compile. The scoring, was not commensurate with the weakness of the bowling. At 229 Pellew and Richardson effected a Rouble change. Heame drove ,the lastnamed to long-on-—a boundary with the first hit. Hearne was badly missed- by Stirling at square-leg when he had scored 70. The batsmen were getting single strokes principally. When he was at 147 Russell lifted one from Smith high to the boundary, but Rundell badly missed the catch. Seventeen were scored off Smith's over of slow googlies. Threes hundred was posted for 226 minutes' batting. Russell, attempting a hard, hit, missed and returned to Smith. His 156 included seventeen 4's and one 6. His principal scoring shot was on the on side. Hendren joined Heame. The last-named had improved since his escapes, his driving and cutting strokes being superb. Hendren took-fifty minutes to reach double figures, and Heame brought 400 up for 307 minutes' play. At 182 Hearne lifted Phillips to mid-off, and the tea adjournment followed, with the score three wickets for 468 runs. Hearne had been .brilliant since lunch; his score included, twenty-two boundaries. Five hundred did not take long to appear. AVhen Hendren was at 79 he jumped out to one fronf Smith, missed it, and was stumped by Ambler. Parkin went out in a similar manner almost immediately afterwards, .and the innings was declared dosed at five wickets for 512 runs-. N Pellew and Smith, for South Australia, put on 50 in thirty-five minutes. Seven overs realised only 3 runs. .Parkin and Hearne were the bowlers. Scores: — ENGLAND.—First Innings.
