The deceased, who was 81 years of age, arrived at Wellington in 1842 in ; the .ship Burmah.: She* resided for many years on the Upper Plain. She leaves a grown-up family of sons and daughters. Mr. James A. Shackleton, another respected resident,of Maetertoh, died at the publio hospital at an early hour on Sunday morning. The decased, who was 62 j years o£ age, was a vice-president of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society and a Past District President of the Druids' Order. He leaves a widow and family of six . The General Labourers' Union of Masterton has resolved to make fresh demands upon employers. The rate of pay asked for is 2s lid per hour. • V The annual district synod in connection with the'MethodistjChureh is to be held at Masterton this month. A garden competition js being held by the Masterton Boy Scouts for prizes donated by the Horticultural Society. The Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company has decided to pay out 2s per lb for butter-fat for the ensuing month. A telegraphic chess match between the Masterton and Stratford Clubs was concluded on Saturday. Masterton won byone board.
