WAIKAREMOANA SCHEME.
laformation as tc the progress of the Waikaremoanr hydro-electric scheme was sought by Mr. J. Vigor Brown (Napier) in a question addressed to the Minister of Public Works ir the House of Representatives yesterday. The Hon. J. G. Coates replied that the following was an estimate of the money being spent on the initial installation at Lake Waikaremoana: —Generating machinery 513,120, switch gear £4290, pipe lines £14,000, transformers £2200, land £3800, roads and bridges £6200. Total, £43,610. Tenders for the generating machinery had been received, and he expected to have a recommendation from the Tenders Board in a very little while. Tenders for switch gear had just closed, and tenders for transformers were to be called for. Negotiations for the land were almost completed, and plans and specifications were being prepared. Everything for the preliminary portion of the scheme was well under way. Themachinery was timed to be here in a certain number of months, and when the roads were ready they hoped to be prepared to take the machinery on to the land. It was hoped to havetheroad work done this summer.
In reply to Mr. Campbell the Minister added that an arrangement had bean made with the Wairoa County Council regarding the road work.
