TYPOGRAPHICAL AWARD
Mr. A. T. Carter, president of the New Zealand Typographical Federation, writes : —"Members <zf the Typographical Federation did not wait for Mr. Pirani's advice to compare the new award with the award of 1917 before occupying your valuable space in pointing out the misleading statement of the secretary of the Wellington Master Printers' Association. We affirm that there is nothing new (in principle or substance) introduced into the preference clause of 1920 as compared with the award of 1917, and in support of this enclosed plsase find copies of awards for your perusal. The only variation is an increase of the maximum subscription for members from Is to Is 6d, corresponding with other increases under the award. As Mr. Pirani's statement that there is a '50 per cent, difference-' may achieve its obvious intention in misleading those, unacquainted with industrial matters that there is some material change in the preference clause, it may be as well to point out that the Wellington Typographical Union has not during the years it has been permitted under the award to charge Is, raised the weekly subscription above 6d for its members. From the serious charges formerly made against the Typographical Federation by the master printers' secretary of misleading the employers and the Court to this miserable quibble should be sufficient to enable the general public to grasp the merits of the issue. We can only state that the last effusion of Mr. Pirani's is a further addition to what we characterised in a former issue as a 'tissue of misleading statements.'"
