NOT ACCEPTABLE

MR HALLY'S SUGGESTION REJECTED BY OWNERS.

The position regarding the Pukemiro mining dispute is not reassuring. Mr. P. Hally. who is negotiating for a settlement, has suggested to the Coal-Mine Owners' Association that it should agree to refer the status of the engine-drivers to the National Disputes Committee, providing that the miners return to work. Thie proposal has been referred to the executive, and the executive has decided that, under the present circumstances, it cannot agree to the proposal. However, the association has authorised Mr. Hally to accept a verbal assu ranee from the responsible officials of the Pukemiro Union to the effect that in the event of a strike of the miners the en-gine-drivers will not leave their employment, such an understanding to hold good during the currency of the present agreement. If the undertaking is given the mine will be reopened.
