AMERICAN TRABE
PROBABLE ,"CUT" IN MOTOR-OARS
Messrs. Scott and Holladay, Wellington, have been advised by their New York house that steel has' increased in price. In the dry goods trade there have been considerable reductions, in. price, brought about, to some extent, by forced liquidation of stocks, on account of high interest rates, viz., from 9 per cent, to 9^ per cent., comparable with. 8 per cent, in London. Higher railway rates are in operation, but as efficiency will be increased and delays minimised, transport may actually be loes than "it was. Electric glass ware and plate glass prices have taken a big rise. Buying is much restricted, but should people weary of economy, then prices of all commodities might go .^till higher. "The domestic automobile trade is dead,- and there is one particular industry where the manufacturers are looking for all the export businesis that they can lay their hand on. Anyone desiring to buy direct any car on the market today can get delivery, if not out of stock, at. least within two or three days, whereas last year waits of five or six months were not uncommon: This is due, of course, both to increased production and decreased purchasing." It is freely rumoured, but not on any authority that jfre would care to quote, that there will be some substantial cuts in the prices of some of the leading makes of motor-wars before the end of the year, and possibly in the course of the next few weeks."
